Out of the Box Fell Down the Rabbit Hole: Alice in Wonderland

Hi Mermaids and Mermen,

I am so excited to be able to sit down and talk you Mermaids again. I have missed y'all so much. My Halloween season was incredibly busy but  it was also so much fun. It was an experience that really fed my passion for the beauty industry and like I always say, Out of the Box is about self love and confidence. Out of the Box is about becoming or creating whatever you want to be. In my previous post I talked a little about my absence and what has been going on with Out of the Box. One of the things I was able to do was start playing around with Special Effects Makeup, which is a lot of fun and takes your creativity to a whole new level. I created a half burnt skin and skull look on myself. I was pretty proud of my work for it being my first SFX look.  I will Link the post here. https://www.instagram.com/p/BLj9-4Xh7--/?taken-by=outoftheboxbeauty

I also got to create some very fun halloween looks. A Suicide Squad Joker, Monster High Zombie, and a ghoul. Being able to create these characters was an amazing experience. With the ghoul look I experimented with shading and special effects. After I was finished with the look it even scared and freaked me out! Doing the children's makeup for their Halloween events was a very rewarding and learning experience. Seeing their faces light up when they got to see their finished looks. A young girl's face glow after seeing her look and saying "More Blood, More Glitter!" Who doesn't want more blood and more glitter? I know I always do :)  A shy, young boy seeing his reflection...Become the character of the Joker. Witnessing his excitement as he got to see his transformation come together with each step of his makeup was a true joy.   I even stepped out of my comfort zone and created his tattoos. Seeing the children's faces light up once their Halloween looks were completed really took me back to my own childhood, when I was a kid I dressed up in costumes and applied makeup year round. My favorite day of the year besides Halloween was Nov 1st because that was when the stores marked costumes half off the original price. Halloween and dress up was make believe and not a care in the world. That was really when my love of makeup, beauty and creating characters really started.

One of the bigger events I got to attend was an Alice in Wonderland costume party.  Once I received my invitation it was instant excitement. My mind started racing with concepts about all the possible makeup looks or costumes ideas to use. Did I want to go with the classic Disney style or the Tim Burton look? Revisiting this tale, I became inspired by Alice and her classic story. One that ignites the readers imagination, one that all who read get lost and fall with her into the whimsical world of Wonderland.

There are not enough words to describe the "wonder" of this party and the beauty of the decorations. As we drove our car up the driveway it felt as if we, too, were falling down the rabbit hole  There was a big Cheshire Cat in the tree, signs pointing us in every direction, the white rabbit's clock leading the path to the party . The amount of details that went into the decorations was beyond magical. I felt like I could have climbed up on the mushroom and smoked the hooka with the caterpillar. It was honestly one of the best and most magical events I have attended. Not to forget, an opportunity for me to create my own interpretation of the Red Queen.

The Bathory Shop, Bath Products with a History

Hello Fellow Mermaids and Mermen,

I am telling y'all Instagram has been on a roll as far as me finding some amazing things to review and feature on the blog for you.

And The Bathory Shop is nothing short from amazing and unique!

As I have voiced on the blog and my Instagram I am all about supporting and trying products from companies that are independent and something that is considered out of the box :)

It was sort of by chance that I found Bathory on Instagram which I'll link their Insta here https://www.instagram.com/thebathoryshop/

I came across their post about Jane Toppan (1880-1901) who was a 26-year old nurse from Boston, Massachusetts who gave lethal injections of morphine to 31 hospital patients, and was suspected of having killed an additional 70 patients over the course of a two-decade career. I am such a fan of women in history especially notorious women. So after reading almost every Instagram post of theirs I was hooked and could not wait to try some of their bath products. And share them with my Mermaids.

"My products are inspired by notorious, historical women - serial killers, robbers, warriors, the kind of women who are strong and fierce, but morally ambiguous. There's something sexy and appealing about these women despite the taboos they represent. They indulge in their darkest impulses. More often than not, they're selfish. But who doesn't need a little "me time"? That's what The Bathory Shop is about - indulging your inner villain, being a little naughty, and at the same time, honoring the dishonorable women who didn't give a flying f*** about stereotypical gender roles or manners."

"For each lady featured in my current and future lines, I'm trying to use scents that directly correlate to their crimes or the location they committed them. "Elizabeth", for example, named for Elizabeth Bathory, smells like blood orange because she supposedly bathed in the blood of her victims. It's not sweet, but a little tart, kind of like her. "Joan", named for Joan Crawford (the inspiration for Mommie Dearest) smells like fresh linen because she likely had obsessive compulsive disorder and was obsessed with cleanliness. "Aileen", named for serial killer Aileen Wuornos, smells like a fruity drink called sex on the beach. Because she was a prostitute in Florida. So there's some dark humor to it all. It's feminist, but it's also fun. And that's what makes doing this so great. I get to make awesome bath supplies, smell great smells, and make stupid jokes all at the same time and the reception has been great." - Amanda Owner of The Bathory Shop

I purchased the Cleopatra Bubble Bath Gel. And the body lotions in the scents

Margreet Mata Hari and Elizabeth Bathory. The shipping was very quick and I received my products within the week of ordering. Everything was packaged very well and secure.

I adore that the packaging is so classy and sleek looking, but also has a twist, for example.. Elizabeth with her blade over her shoulder was such a well thought out detail to include.

The body lotion is a goats milk based lotion which is something I have not tried in the past. The texture of both lotions are between a regular body lotion and a body butter. Not too thin, Not too thick....  Just Right <3  Both lotions absorbed into the skin very easily and did not leave my skin feeling greasy , at all, but left my skin feeling very soft. The frangances of both lotions could still be smelled on your skin after applying but it was not overpowering.  I can't get enough.

The "Margreet" Mata Hari Lotion has scent notes of bergamot, ground ginger, sandalwood, Indian patchouli, and sweet basil. The lotion  has a very beautiful teal color in the bottle. This scent to me is a very sexy night out or night in type of scent.

"Margaretha Geertruida "Margreet" Zelle (August 7, 1876 – October 15, 1917), better known by the stage name Mata Hari, was a Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan. During World War I, the Netherlands remained neutral. As a Dutch subject, Margreet was thus able to cross national borders freely. Hired by army captain Georges Ladoux of France, she agreed to pass military information gleaned from her conquests to the French government. Not long after, however, Mata Hari was accused of being a German spy. She was executed by firing squad on October 15, 1917, after French authorities learned of her alleged double agency."(Bathory)

The Elizabeth Bathory lotion scent note is Blood Orange...very fitting. The lotion has a tangerine color to it. I personally like to use this lotion in the morning because the blood orange scent is very uplifting and awaking to the senses.

"Much has been written about the so-called Infamous Lady, Tiger of Csejthe, and Blood Countess, Erzsébet (Elizabeth) Báthory of Hungary. Reviled as the World's Worst Female Serial Killer, Countess Báthory is said to have bathed in the blood of the 650 servant girls she tortured and murdered. Upon her arrest, she was condemned to life imprisonment and walled up in a tower of her castle. Reputed to be a vampire, lesbian, and witch, her shocking story has inspired the Brothers Grimm, Bram Stoker, and gothic horror fans around the world for the past four hundred years."(Bathory)

The Cleopatra Bubble Bath Gel has scent notes of light Egyptian musk scent with hints of jasmine, gardenia, myrrh, and patchouli. The gel in the bottle is a gorgeous gold color. But when used in the bath it does not change the water colors. The gel produces a nice amount of bubbles for your bath. The scent is very relaxing especially when taking a bubble bath. If you purchase the lotion in this scent I think it would be a perfect addition to your nighttime wind down form the daily routine.

"Cleopatra VII Philopator, known to history simply as Cleopatra, was the last active pharaoh of Ptolemaic Egypt, shortly survived as pharaoh by her son Caesarion. After her reign, Egypt became a province of the then-recently established Roman Empire. Cleopatra represented herself as the reincarnation of an Egyptian goddess, Isis. She originally ruled jointly with her father, Ptolemy XII Auletes, and later with her brothers, Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV. As pharaoh she consummated a liaison with Julius Caesar that solidified her grip on the throne. She later elevated her son with Caesar, Caesarion, to co-ruler in name. After Caesar's assassination in 44 BC, she aligned with Mark Antony in opposition to Caesar's legal heir, Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (later known as Augustus). After losing the Battle of Actium to Octavian's forces, Antony committed suicide. Cleopatra followed suit. According to tradition, she killed herself by means of an asp bite on August 12, 30 BC. She was outlived by Caesarion, who was declared pharaoh by his supporters, but soon killed on Octavian's orders. Egypt then became the Roman province of Aegyptus."

I highly recommend The Bathory Shop I can speak for myself when I say I will personally continue to purchase items from this company. And once The Bathory starts selling the bath bombs they are working on I will be getting those as well. I had the chance to try a tester and it was on the same level as a Lush Bath Bomb. I fell in love!

All products that were reviewed and many other items can be purchased at TheBathoryShop on Etsy which I have linked for you. https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheBathoryShop?ref=l2-shopheader-name

LunatiCK Cosmetic Labs Review

Welcome Fellow Mermaids and Mermen,

I feel that is post is timed perfectly since we are starting to transition into Fall.. Come on you know you are counting down the days for the Pumpkin Spice Latte Release, no shame here. LunatiCK Cosmetics Labs is a brand that screams everything Fall and Halloween.

LunatiCK Cosmetic Labs is an independent cosmetic brand that I originally found on Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/lunatick_cosmetic_labs/

Their Instagram has very creative and inspiring post with makeup looks and product features. When I started Out of the Box Beauty I knew this would be one of the first brands I wanted to review.

All of their products are Vegan, Talc Free, and Cruelty Free. Formulated in the USA.

"LunatiCK Cosmetic Labs specializes in all aspects of horror, beauty, and special effects makeup. LunatiCK Cosmetic Labs is for everyone from beautiful blushing brides to beautiful bloody brides of Frankenstein."(Lunaticklabs.com)

LunatiCK is a brand that has shown me that the devil is in the details. They have proven that to me as soon as I received my package in the mail, and yes I did keep the box for almost two weeks to show all of you. The box that the package arrived in has a very "Beetlejuice" vibe to it and made me even more excited for what was inside.

The product that I was most anticipating was their Contour palette. Every time this was shown on their Instagram I couldn't wait to get it in my hands. The front cover reminds me of the Hocus Pocus Spell Book from the movie. The details in the packaging are above any other brand I have ever seen. Every time you pick your palette up to use it, you see a new detail that you didn't notice before.

Contour Shades
The Contour palette contains shades for contouring, highlighting and blush. There is literally a shade for every skin tone. I am a medium/tan skin tone right now and I was able to use this palette. There are contour and blush shades that can be used for deeper skin tones. It also contains very light and cool tone colors which would look magical on light/porcelain skin. The pigmentation of these powders is unreal. On the face they blend like a dream but do not brush away and look like you never put any product on. I used every shade in this palette on my face. Any shades that were too light or dark for my complexion I used as eye shadows. On the eyes the colors blended every easy and smooth. These colors make wonderful transition shades. As soon as I hit pan on any of these shades, I will be repurchasing.. that is how much I love this palette.

Once again LunatiCK has wowed me with their packaging with this eye shadow palette called Supernatural. The palette come in a very cute coffin shaped container and has a Ouija board look to it.

Shades L-R(Invocation,Myth,Spook,Reincarnation,Ghoulight)

When I opened the palette I literally squealed! This palette is so amazing and creative. And just like the contour palette every time I pick up this palette I discover another detail that they added to the packaging. This palette has very natural mauve tones where you can create a very easy simple look. It is also diverse enough that you can create a smoky look. When you get this palette don't base the performance of the shadows on finger swatches. Remember finger swatches don't always show how products wear on the eyes or face.  In order for me to get full pigmentation with my skin tone (Med/Tan)I used a white base on my eyes (ex. NYX eye pencil in Milk). So this palette will be pigmented on a medium  and darker skin tones with a light primer. But this palette would be a light complexion's dream.  The colors blended on top on each other without becoming muddy and you are still able to distinguish the different colors on the eyes. It is very hard to also stop using this palette I am beyond in love. LunatiCK's website also has the option for you to build our own palette and you can customized what colors you would like to put into your coffin. Which is another awesome feature that they offer.

LunatiCK also has two other pallets available on their site.

Zombie Defense Eye Shadow palette
Hocus Pocus Eye Shadow Palette

All of these products, as well as the others,  they offer can be purchased on their website:  http://www.lunaticklabs.com
